When the guide coat remains in a low spot, stop and assess it. A shallow area may need another round of primer. A deeper low spot needs proper filler work, not another five coats of surfacer. After the panel is blocked, clean it carefully and inspect it under strong angled light. Look along the length of the panel, not straight at it. Small ripples, pinholes, and scratch marks are far easier to fix now than after color is applied.

Also watch for incompatible layers. Old unknown paint, aerosol primer, uncured filler, and bargain coatings can react badly under a quality two-component system.
